Does Bio Oil Work?

If you haven’t heard of Bio Oil by now, then you may have been living in a bubble! Bio oil has accumulated quite a few accolades over the years from various places around the world, but does Bio Oil work and what is in it?

In answer to the last question, Bio Oil is manufactured from natural essential oils such as calendula, lavender, rosemary and chamomile. Vitamins A and E, a rose fragrance and colouring (don’t know why) are added together within an oil base. Some of the ingredients sound a bit scary, but using their Latin or scientific names can do that! For example, benzyl salicylate occurs naturally in a variety of plants and plant extracts and is widely used in blends of fragrance materials. As with most things, natural or not, individuals can be sensitive to any or all ingredients. So, if this is you, stop using Bio Oil! Most people however are just fine and swear by the product.

Before you feel misled however, please understand that the primary ingredient is derived from petroleum which, as it sits on the skin is then acted on by a further ingredient that works to force the active ingredients into the skin. If you happily use petroleum jelly, then you will happy with Bio Oil. If this worries you, just don’t use it.

Bio Oil is one of the most popular products for scar and stretch mark treatments since it was launched in 2002. That’s at least 10 years, so if asking does Bio Oil work, I think if it did nothing at all it would no longer be on the market. According to surveys, it is also one of the most recommended products for stretch marks and scars by doctors and pharmacists.

Many people use Bio Oil at night as a moisturiser when it has been found to leave the skin ‘glowing’, well nourished and to even out skin tone. It won’t work overnight and most people report it can take three months for any real effect.

Bio oil is claimed to improve some of the following:

The appearance of existing stretch marks
The appearance of aging skin
The appearance of blemishes
Skin dehydration
The appearance of uneven skin tone
The appearance of scars
